My name is Steve Porter and I have the honor of serving as chairman for the newly formed board of Stadia. My wife, Pam, and I have been married for 36 years. We have 3 children who are all married and have given us 5 beautiful grandchildren.
We realized about 20 years ago that if an endeavor involved helping kids, it was an endeavor that was close to our hearts. We became focused on helping and serving kids, especially those at risk. Caring for children led me to serve on the board of the Christian Children’s Home of Ohio, and it led our family to sponsor many children through Compassion International, build a school in Ecuador, and build a family center in Peru. We were on the path we thought we were supposed to be on.
Then along came Stadia.
At first, I didn’t get the whole church planting thing. All I wanted to do was to help kids. But a trip to Ecuador with my children changed my perspective. If I help plant a church, I can help to affect the lives of not only 200 children, but a whole community. I will never forget the look on my daughter’s face the night before we left Ecuador and I committed to planting two churches with Stadia. She had caught the vision, too.
Since that first trip, we have funded 15 church plants, which have changed the lives of over 3,000 children and their communities. And it’s not only global planting that has caught our hearts. We now attend an urban, multi-cultural, multiethnic, domestic Stadia church plant that we have been a part of since its pre-launch phase, and it’s hopefully no surprise that we serve on the children’s and hospitality teams.
This is truly an exciting and challenging time for Stadia. Going from an organization that operates under the umbrella of a parent company to an independent non-profit is scary and exhausting. Being involved from the start has shown me the quality of the people that work daily to make sure that “every child has a church.” I love to create things, and being the first chairman allows me to be part of “creating” the future of Stadia from a new beginning. The decision to serve on the board was an easy one because of the passion that I see throughout the organization. When Pam asked me what I hoped to accomplish by being on the board, I said, “I hope for Stadia to be out of business someday because they are so successful that every child now has a church.”
